The Lifetime Care and Support Authority will fund the reasonable and necessary cost of home modifications for a participant who, in the long term, will be residing in a new home or returning to their existing home and the need for home modifications is related to the motor accident injury.

Part 14 (Home Modifications) of the Lifetime Care and Support Guidelines relates to the management of home modifications.

To determine the most suitable major home modifications to meet the participant's needs the Authority has selected occupational therapists who have demonstrated specific expertise in prescribing major home modifications for people with severe disability including people with:

  • brain injury
  • spinal cord injury
  • burns
  • blindness
  • amputations.

These occupational therapists are called Building Modification Approved Assessors.

To ensure the completion of home modifications in a timely manner and according to recommendations and Australian Building Standards, the Authority has selected services who have demonstrated expertise in managing building projects, including projects for people with severe disability.

These services are called Building Modification Approved Project Managers.

Procedures and forms required during home modification process:

This form is used to advise the Authority of a participant's current status and proposed discharge destination. This form can be completed by the participant, a family member or guardian and or therapist. The information in this form is used by the Authority to determine the next step in the home modifications process. The Authority's decision making process is greatly assisted the more detailed the information that is provided in this form.

This form is to be used by building modification approved assessor following assessment of a participant's status and their home modification needs.

This form is used to obtain approval from owner of the property (whether the owner is the participant or someone else) for minor modifications to a property.

Buliding modification approved assessor's and building modification approved project manager's are required to use this form to request additional costs outside the approved fee schedule or to request additional work that is outside the approved project plan. This form needs to be submitted and written approval received from the Authority prior to providing the requested variation in services.

A document outlining what constitutes a major versus a minor home modification is currently being developed and will be posted on this page soon.

A document for participants and service providers outlining the process involved in a major home modification project is being developed and will be posted on this page soon.
